Peak season (our take)

Our take on January

Dry, mild and busy. Winter visitors fill the hotels, and the ocean is at its coolest of the year, brisk rather than cold. Cold fronts can bring a few cool, breezy days and rough surf.

Events in January

  • Art Deco Weekend, Ocean Drive, South Beach (5th St to 14th Pl).
    Next: January 15–17, 2027.
Free street festival run by the Miami Design Preservation League, with tours, music, classic cars and a market. Crowds and road closures on Ocean Drive; little effect on hotel prices. Organiser
  • Capital One Orange Bowl (College Football Playoff), Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens.
    Next: Thursday January 14, 2027.
In the expanded playoff the game moves each year; in 2027 it is a semifinal in mid-January, not around New Year. Visiting fans add hotel demand in peak winter season; game-day traffic around Miami Gardens. Organiser

For the beach in January

  • The water is brisk: fine for a swim on a sunny afternoon, but bring a towel layer; the bay beaches run cooler than the ocean this time of year.
  • Mostly dry; cold fronts can bring breezy days with rough surf and higher rip-current risk.
  • Even in winter the midday UV Index in Miami is around 4, moderate (EPA): sunscreen still matters.
