About Mizell-Johnson
Formerly John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, this is the wild stretch between Dania Beach and the Port Everglades inlet: dunes, sea grape and boardwalks to a long Atlantic beach, a mangrove-lined creek with paddling, and cruise ships sliding past the jetty. Three reefs lie offshore, the nearest about 300 yards out.
There are no lifeguards, so swim with care, and use a red dive flag when snorkelling. The park was renamed in 2016 for Dr. Von D. Mizell and Eula Johnson, Broward NAACP leaders who led the wade-ins that desegregated South Florida's beaches; the site was once the county's beach for Black residents.
