About Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale's beach is the one from the spring-break films: a long, wide strand along A1A with the white wave wall, hotels and bars across the road, and Las Olas Boulevard running inland. Ocean Rescue staffs 20 towers along about three miles every day of the year.

Surfers, kayaks, paddleboards and inflatables are limited to the zone between Tower 16 and Tower 20 at NE 18th Street, and the beach has strict rules: no alcohol, no glass, no tents and no dogs on the sand, except at the city's Canine Beach just north of Sunrise Boulevard.

Facts, checked on the official page

Lifeguards
Every day from 20 towers covering about three miles: 9:45 a.m.–7 p.m. in spring and summer, 9:15 a.m.–6 p.m. in fall and winter. [1]
Facilities
Restrooms and showers at Las Olas Oceanside Park and Fort Lauderdale Beach Park; accessible showers at Sebastian Street. [5]
Rules
No alcohol, glass, tents, canopies, fencing or digging holes; dogs banned on the sand except service animals and at Canine Beach; fishing from the beach only 6 p.m.–8 a.m. [2]
Surf zone
Surfing, kayaks, paddleboards and inflatables only between Tower 16 and Tower 20 (NE 18th Street). [2]
Canine Beach
North of Sunrise Boulevard, from lifeguard tower 16 to 100 yards north of Sunrise: 6–9 a.m. and 5–7 p.m., up to three dogs per person. The city page doesn't mention a permit or fee or limit the days; call 954-828-7275 to check. [6]
Accessibility
Accessible parking at 3031 Sebastian Street; for help, call the city on 954-828-4595. [3]
Without a car
Broward County Transit Route 11 serves A1A at Las Olas ($2); the free LauderGO! Beach Link shuttle runs daily from 9:30 a.m.; the Water Taxi stops at Las Olas. [4]

Not stated on the official pages we read (so we don't claim them): public parking rates; a beach wheelchair (an earlier version of the city's accessibility page listed one at the Sebastian Street lifeguard station; the current pages don't).
